Teaching

My teaching philosophy centers on preparing students to engage with politics, whether it be as a career path or as informed citizens. More so, I help students forge a link between critical concepts and theories to the complex and often messy politics-as-practiced. To do this, I emphasize in-class discussion of current events, critical evaluation of the course material, and student-led sessions tying in course topics to their past experiences.

Below are the classes I have taught as both an Instructor of Record and a Teaching Assistant, in addition to courses I am prepared to teach.

Instructor of Record

Global Politics in an Age of Populism and Nationalism (Syllabus)

Throughout the past century, nationalism and populism have stood as two of the most powerful forces in global politics. The recent successful political campaigns of those such as Donald Trump, Viktor Orbán, and Jair Bolsonaro have displayed the enduring need for both scholars and students of politics to understand and examine these two political dynamics. This course will first explore the conceptual foundations of nationalism and populism and the debates surrounding their sources. Next, students will examine the consequences for both domestic and foreign policy, including such issues as trade, democracy, international institutions, and war. Finally, the course will investigate both historical and contemporary cases of nationalist and populist leaders across the globe.

Introduction to International Relations (Syllabus)

Course Description: Why do states sometimes cooperate and, at other times, come into violent conflict? What is the role of domestic politics and regime type in international politics? What is the impact of trade and globalization? This course explores these core questions by providing an introduction to the study of international relations. The first section of the course examines the key theories of international relations. The second section covers the history of modern international politics, focusing on key events. The final section of the course explores key topics of international relations, including nuclear weapons, trade, globalization, international law, and terrorism.

International Security (Syllabus)

Course Description: Why do states go to war? What is the role of nuclear weapons in modern international politics? Will China rise peacefully? This course provides an introduction to security studies, which is defined here as the systematic examination of the role of the threat and use of military force in relation within and among states. To this end, the primary focus of the course will be on war in international relations. The first section of the course examines the key concepts and theories of international security. In the second section of the course, students will explore key issues of international security, such as military interventions, terrorism, and grand strategy. We will also consider larger questions of contemporary international politics, such as the rise of China and emerging trends in U.S. security policy.

U.S. Foreign Policy (Syllabus)

Course Description: For a significant portion of its history, the United States has played an active and central role in international politics. During this period, U.S. policymakers have made critical decisions, such as when to go to war, to build international institutions, and to intervene in humanitarian crises. How does the United States make these decisions and what are their impacts on international politics broadly? This course provides an introduction to the history and process of U.S. Foreign Policy. In the first section of the course, students will examine theories and concepts of foreign policy-making within the United States. The second section surveys the history of U.S. foreign policy, spanning Washington's Farewell Address to current U.S. strategies in the Pacific amid China's rise. Finally, Students will engage with current issues and debates of U.S. foreign policy, including humanitarian intervention, grand strategy, trade.

Foundations of International Political Economy (Syllabus)

Course Description: Why do states trade while others impose barriers to trade? What role do both domestic politics and the international system play in determining economic relations between states? Is the future one of globalization, regionalization, or protectionism? This course probes these questions by surveying the politics of international economic relations. The first half of the course addresses foundational concepts, theories, and texts of IPE. The second half of the course delves into major debates in the field, including international trade, international finance, institutionalism, regionalism, globalization, development, environmental issues, and financial crises.
